Google Chrome Memory Usage

Google Chrome Memory Usage, originally uploaded by Rich Bradshaw.

Browsing to about:memory in Google Chrome gives you this interesting display showing memory usage for both itself as well as other browsers running.

According to the browser, this is the memory usage of the following browsers on blank pages. (Although Chrome is on the about:memory page, that’s a different process, as shown below, so that doesn’t mess things up.)

Browser Total Memory (kb)
Google Chrome 0.2 39,928
Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 62,726
Firefox 3.1b1 76,056
Opera 9.52 20,124
Safari 3.1.1 45,356

In other words, Opera still uses the least, but Google Chrome is easily in second place, followed by Safari, IE and then Firefox.

Just an interesting nugget of information!

  1. Hmm. This is pretty interesting. I'm doing my test drive of Google Chrome right. So far, it seems pretty darn fast and isn't taxing my system.

  3. Yes…its QUICK…!
But…even though it´s according to these information using little memory…somehow with CHROM running my memory usage climbs up. I tried to find the reason and could not find the source…
    User Interface: GREAT!

  4. Remember that this is just on first boot, and doesn't simulate browsing at all.

Flash takes up a huge amount of memory, as does Adobe Acrobat – both use about 3 times as much as Chrome it seems, so they might be the culprits.

  6. Would someone tell me why there are two or three processes for Chrome running on my PC? But over all it is fast, well with a GB of RAM it is bound to be fast :-)

  7. Your test doesn't make any sense, my firefox is using only 34mb. I did the same thing as you, but I don't have opera and safari installed atm.

    IE 7.00.6000.16705 22,084k
    Chromium 0.2.152.1 26,350k
    Firefox 3.0.1 34,868k

You MUST consider things like addons, history, etc. Maybe even how big your favorites list is.

Yes, Google Chrome is a lot faster than Firefox. Yes, Google Chrome offers some nice features. Nevertheless it's still in beta (like Gmail has been for too long time imo) and it's an very early stage of public development to say “hey, it is faster!!” or “it uses less memory than that other browser”.

  8. I liked the browser so much so that I wanted to write a post in my language about it… searched the net and found your, which I translated and it’s there for my people to know about this great browser.

  9. Eminently an expound fact and,due to precision,an equitable experiment indeed and undoubtedly.A nirvana.

  11. Your test FAIL!

How much replications ? What is the criteria to use this workload ? Scientifically and experimentally and empirically FAIL at all points.

  12. Thank you very much for this post! I was looking for the lowest memory browser available since I have an older PC currently and like to do multiple tasks at once, like having Photoshop, foobar2k or a game open while also being able to have a browser open. I didn't realize there was such a huge leap in memory usage data from browser to browser. Firefox just eats up memory!

  13. anyway, i move from chome users to a opera users, why?? b’cz chrome using my RAM too much, one tab in chrome use each part of memories, as you shud know, im using 1GB RAM, but when i open 10 tabs on my browser (chrome) my computer crashed and i get disconnected from internet. yea, sure it’s so damn fast, and i agreed with it but fast sometime have bad effects to others. firefox still the best browser to me.
